🚂 Throwback Thursday!
Five years ago this month, as the Pandemic was still "front and center" in society, the Colorado Railroad Museum celebrated a milestone that was 14 years in the making with a total cost of over $2 million. This milestone was the return to steam of Rio Grande Southern "Ten Wheeler" locomotive No. 20, which had last operated in the early 1950s.
On Friday evening, July 31, 2020, many of the donors who supported this project over the long haul gathered for a special series of events commemorating No. 20’s return to service. The next two days--the weekend of August 1 and 2--the festivities opened to the public, giving visitors the chance to see and hear this iconic locomotive back in steam once again.
The late Jim Wrinn, editor of Trains magazine, was on hand and served as Master of Ceremonies for the Friday evening events. A special Trains photo charter that same weekend even re-created a famous photo from the cover of a 1942 edition of the magazine, which had featured No. 20 in action!
It was a truly memorable weekend—and an unforgettable moment in the history of the Colorado Railroad Museum. 🚂💨
