The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO was originally opened in 1959 and continues to make efforts to improve accessibility across
the 15-acre property.
The main Museum grounds include extensive paved walkways and ramps providing ground-level access to the Main Museum Depot, Library Archives, and the Restoration Roundhouse. The grounds function much like an active railyard. Guests will occasionally encounter construction operations, large equipment in use and other loud noises (such as bells & whistles during ride operations). In addition to the accessible restrooms in the Musuem’s Library building, the Museum recently installed new, accessible restroom facilities on the east side of the property.
Most ride operations are accessible via a chair lift including Day Out With Thomas™ & THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride™. Unfortunately the Galloping Goose Motorcar is not wheelchair accessible due to the historic nature of its original construction. The Roundhouse Observation Gallery is accessible via paved sidewalk, as is the main floor of both the Library Archives and the Main Depot Building. Currently, there is no elevator access to the Upper or Lower Galleries in the Main Depot building. The Museum is also working to improve accessibility online on ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org as well as through its digital content.
