California Zephyr Vista Dome Coach to be Restored
Burlington Dome Silver Rifle Acquired by Museum in 2023
GOLDEN, CO – September 2, 2026…. The Colorado Railroad Museum (CRRM) in Golden is excited to announce that a former California Zephyr dome car is joining its collection, a long-desired addition. Early this morning, the all-stainless steel Budd-built Vista Dome coach began its journey by rail from Portola, California to Ohio, where it will be restored to its as-built appearance under contract. When complete, the car will move to Golden, Colorado for display, further enriching the Museum’s renowned collection of Centennial State railroading icons.
Built in 1948 for the Burlington Route (as part of the three-railroad California Zephyr operating partnership, which also included the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Western Pacific railroads), Silver Rifle was acquired by the Museum in 2023 with help from generous donors. Preparations have been quietly under way since then to move the car on its own wheels to a restoration site. The car was previously owned by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum, and on loan for many years to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California.
This particular Vista Dome coach was never significantly modified during its service years. The car still has its original under-floor-level skirting, and its brief time with Amtrak was marked by new upholstery but few other changes. After carefully considering these factors, the Museum has determined to restore the car—complete with its original mechanical systems—to its as-delivered appearance. Since the car is intended for exhibit, not for operation on the U.S. railroad system, it will not be upgraded to incorporate Head-End Power (HEP) or receive other modifications. Original mechanical systems will instead remain intact.

We’re delighted to add dome car Silver Rifle to this list of exciting projects and programs for 2026.”
Why THIS Dome Car?
The Colorado Railroad Museum has long sought a Dome Car for its collection. Finding the right one, however, has taken many years and careful consideration of the Museum’s goals for collecting one in the first place. The train that it was built for, the California Zephyr, provided answers as this journey continued. The choice of which railroad (CB&Q? D&RGW? WP?) to select as original owner also became clearer as the Museum considered its existing collections.
The California Zephyr has been credited with helping to save the American passenger train at a pivotal time in history. How? This pre-Amtrak train marketed the idea of scenic and comfortable travel by train for everyone, with comfortable accommodation and the journey itself (scenery) being more important than the amount of time required (speed). Today, Amtrak carries on this marketing campaign in various ways for its long-distance train offerings.
At a time when America’s finest western trains were known primarily for getting there fast, the California Zephyr offered an affordable journey for coach travelers, as well as first-class options for Pullman travel. Sleeping car passengers had their choice of two (reserved) dome cars on each train, while coach passengers had three dome coaches available. Regardless of their choice of accommodation, all passengers (including many families) had great service, food and drink options, and access to a dome car throughout the journey.
While much has changed in the years since aboard long-distance Amtrak trains in the West, including the California Zephyr, the availability of both coach and sleeping accommodations continues—along with a dome car for passengers to experience during the journey.
Joining the “Monument to an Idea”
The Colorado Railroad Museum is already home to the Dome Car Monument, a unique stone masonry arch originally erected in Colorado’s Glenwood Canyon near the site where an Electro-Motive Division general manager (Cyrus Osborne) conceived the idea of the modern-day railroad dome car. A year after the streamlined California Zephyr’s 1949 debut, the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, together with General Motors, came together to memorialize the dome car’s original idea by erecting this unique, stone monument along the train’s route.
In the 1980s, the Dome Car Monument stood in the path of Interstate Highway 70 construction. It was carefully moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum’s campus in Golden, where it remains on exhibit today. Refurbished and re-dedicated in 2024—on the California Zephyr’s 75th anniversary—the Monument continues to hold special significance. The recent acquisition of Vista Dome coach Silver Rifle will complete a long-held goal for the Museum, enabling a full-size dome car to be displayed together with this fitting “monument to an idea.”
