This summer, the Colorado Railroad Museum has something fun planned every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, mid-May through mid-August! Climb aboard for Train Rides all four days each (long) weekend, and enjoy the Museum’s primarily outdoor campus with fresh air and plenty of rich railroad heritage to enjoy.

Advance Ticket Purchase is recommended, especially if you would like to take a train ride at a particular time.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happening every Thursday-Sunday, May 12 through August 14, 2022:

Thursdays: Join us for Thrilling Thursdays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m! Each Thursday features historic characters, demonstrations, and special guests from our cultural partner organizations. A weekly Pop-Up Exhibit will explore this summer’s theme of innovation, and kids can “scavenger hunt” for our mascot, Spike! Enjoy craft activities, turntable demonstrations, try out our low-tech but fun locomotive simulator, and learn about telegraphy, too. Bring your kids, grandkids and friends—they’ll enjoy learning about Colorado’s rich railroad heritage while having fun, too! (Included with regular Museum Admission).

Fridays: Every Friday, join us for two different Guided Tour opportunities! Each tour offers an hour of exploration. At 10:30 a.m., join us for a “Highlights Tour” which is a great way to start off if you are new to the Museum. At 1:30 p.m., join our “Special Topic Tour” to explore a different aspect of Colorado’s railroad history with a themed, guided tour! Each week’s theme is explored using a variety of museum resources to help bring the subject to life, and guests are welcome to continue their visit on their own after the tour. All tours are $3 per person, in addition to regular Museum Admission.

Saturdays and Sundays: Join us each weekend for “Touring the Rails!” Volunteers are stationed at key locations throughout our outdoor Railyard to answer questions and point out some of railroading’s less obvious but more universal aspects between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Try your hand at our low-tech yet fun diesel locomotive simulator. Learn how our turntable uses balance and leverage so a single person can push a steam locomotive all by themselves—and try your hand! Learn more about the telegraph, America’s first form of revolutionary electronic communication, which dates from over 180 years ago! (Included with regular Museum Admission.)

Train Rides: Departing Thursday through Sunday, every half-hour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ride aboard open-air and/or enclosed coaches pulled by our diesel-electric locomotive, circling our 15-acre outdoor railyard on a 15-minute journey. ($4 adults, $2 children ages 6-17, in addition to regular Museum Admission.)

More Details: Learn more about each of these activities by visiting our Interactive Calendar at www.ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org, which lists what’s happening each day of the month!

After August 14: Beginning in mid-August 2022, schools return to regular session in the Denver Metro region. Here at the Colorado Railroad Museum, we will remain open Tuesday-Sunday. We return to offering Train Rides on Saturdays only through Memorial Day Weekend, then again Saturdays in October. (Regular Train Rides not available the last three weekends of September; Day Out With Thomas advance tickets required to visit during those weekends). Friday Tours continue year-round.

Know Before You Go: We recommend purchase of admission and train ride tickets in advance, as certain dates and train departure times may sell out in advance. Although regular Museum Admission and Train Rides are free for Museum Members, we suggest advance reservations regardless. Click Here for Advance Admission and Train Ride Ticketing.
