Weekend Activities This Summer

This summer, the Colorado Railroad Museum has something fun planned every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-August! Climb aboard for train rides all four days each weekend, and enjoy the Museum’s primarily outdoor campus with fresh air and plenty of rich railroad heritage to enjoy.

Advance Ticket Purchase is recommended, especially if you would like to take a train ride at a particular time. Note that we are releasing tickets for reservation approximately two weeks in advance, so advance purchase is NOT currently available for, say a weekend day one month from now.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happening every Thursday-Sunday Through August 16, 2020:

THURSDAYS:
Join us for Thrilling Thursdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m! Each Thursday features special guests and demonstrations. A new Pop-Up Exhibit will explore our weekly theme, and kids can search for our mascot, Spike! Topics explored include the nuts and bolts of how trains work, to more imaginative themes like “Railroad Photography” and “Working on the Railroad.” Bring your kids, grandkids and friends to enjoy the story of railroads! (Included with regular Museum Admission).

FRIDAYS:
Every Friday, join us for an hour of exploring a different aspect of Colorado’s railroad history with a themed, guided tour! Each week’s theme is explored using a variety of museum resources to help bring the subject to life, and guests are welcome to continue their visit on their own after the tour. ($3 per person, in addition to regular Museum Admission).

SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS: Join us each weekend for Touring the Rails! Volunteers are stationed at key locations throughout our outdoor Rail Yard to answer questions and point out some of railroading’s less obvious but more universal aspects between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Learn how our turntable uses balance and leverage so a single person can push a steam locomotive all by themselves—and try your hand! Marvel at the primitive safety environment of the 19th century, and see how a caboose was central to this part of “working on the railroad.” Learn more about the telegraph, America’s first form of revolutionary electronic communication, which dates from over 180 years ago! (Included with regular Museum Admission).

Know Before You Go: Masks are currently required to gain entry to the Museum. We recommend purchase of admission and train ride tickets in advance, as our overall Museum and Train Ride capacities have been reduced for the time being. Although regular Museum Admission and Train Rides are free for Museum Members, we suggest advance reservations regardless. Click Here for Advance Admission and Train Ride Ticketing.

TRAIN RIDES: Departing Thursday through Sunday, every half-hour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ride aboard open-air cars pulled by a small but mighty diesel-electric locomotive, circling our 15-acre outdoor rail yard on a 15-minute journey. ($4 adults, $2 children ages 6-17, in addition to regular Museum Admission.)

More Details: Learn more about each of these activities by visiting our Interactive Calendar at www.ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org, which lists what’s happening each day of the month!

After August 16: Beginning in mid-August 2020, schools return to regular session in the Denver Metro region. Here at the Colorado Railroad Museum, we will remain open Tuesday-Sunday. We return to offering Train Rides on Saturdays only through October. Friday Tours will also continue.
