The Colorado Railroad Museum had to overcome a series of unique requirements to even host the event that year. The guest count was reduced for comfort and safety. But because social distancing required a very long train be assembled, the only locomotive big enough to pull the train was Denver & Rio Grande Western steam engine No. 491!
Another 2020 innovation was the introduction of Live Entertainment for the event, which not only added to the fun but helped keep guests safely distanced during this challenging time. The present-day Day Out With Thomas™ event, going on weekends right now at the Museum, benefitted from this and other changes that have made the event a true family favorite!

The Museum ended up being the ONLY heritage railroad in North America to successfully and safely host Day Out With Thomas™ in 2020, following the Pandemic's onset in early March. What a year!
