It’s #ThrowbackThursday! In honor of the recent announcement that Denver & Rio Grande Western steam locomotive No. 223 will be restored to operation through a partnership between Ogden City, the 223 Locomotive Foundation, and the Colorado Railroad Museum, we’re looking back at this 1881-built narrow-gauge classic.

The Class C-16, 2-8-0 “Consolidation” is one of just two survivors out of more than 1,800 Grant-built locomotives constructed between 1867 and 1897.

The varied, fascinating, and once-prolific history of U.S. locomotive builders is just one more aspect of the rich railroading heritage preserved and shared by the Museum, located in Golden, Colorado, and open year-round.
