What is Day Out With Thomas™?

Day Out With Thomas™ is family fun in an outdoor and socially distanced environment, as Thomas the Tank Engine travels to Golden for his birthday celebration! Thomas & Friends™ is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and families can join the outdoor fun when the #1 Engine pulls into the Colorado Railroad Museum. With enhanced health and safety protocols in place, this fun-filled event has been adjusted to meet local guidance and offers families the opportunity to hop on board an interactive train ride with a life-sized Thomas the Tank Engine, as well as enjoy access to hands-free activities including live entertainment, scavenger hunt, hay bale maze, stage shows, sing-a-longs and much more!

Who is Thomas the Tank Engine?

Since Thomas the Tank Engine left the depot 75 years ago, this Really Useful Engine and his Island of Sodor friends have chugged their way into the hearts of preschoolers and grownups worldwide. Based on The Railway Series of classic stories authored by a father who loved trains and wanted a shared experience with his son, Thomas & Friends™ is a rite of passage that inspires the imagination while teaching life lessons of friendship, exploration and cooperation.

What are the appropriate ages for Day Out With Thomas?

Day Out With Thomas is a family event that welcomes passengers of all ages. Younger children are those most likely to be especially fond of Thomas & Friends.

When is the event?

Three weekends: September 12-13, 19-20, and 26-27, 2020

What is included in the ticket price?

A ticket for Day Out With Thomas includes the train ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, as well as a variety of Thomas & Friends themed entertainment in an Outdoor and Socially Distanced environment. Highlights include:

  • 20-minute Train Ride led by a full-sized, talking Thomas the Tank Engine locomotive. With staggered seating allowing for safe distancing, this year’s train ride features an all-new interactive story where you’ll earn your official Travel Badge by helping Thomas.
  • Admission to select portions of the Colorado Railroad Museum with outdoor offerings and activities included
  • Hands-free activities and entertainment featuring:
    • Live Theatrical Entertainment featuring juggling, magic show, acrobatics, sing-alongs, storytelling and more in spacious outdoor stage settings
    • Hay Bale Maze offering plenty of room for kids to explore and play
    • Scavenger Hunt featuring family fun as you work together to find all of the answers and items—and collect temporary tattoos, a party favor and coloring sheets to take home for more fun later.
    • Outdoor Scale Model Trains operating all day long on the Denver Garden Railway Society’s permanent on-site, landscaped G-scale railroad
    • Push a Locomotive Around aboard a 120-year old, “armstrong”-powered railroad turntable
    • A special appearance by Sir Topham Hatt, Controller of the Railway
    • Photo Opportunities throughout the event, including with Thomas himself!
    • Step-On Access to selected historic railroad cars and locomotives
    • Antique Engine Display with farm tractors plus hit-and-miss engines
  • Food, snacks, drinks and treats available on-site for purchase
  • Pop-up gift shop on-site with exclusive Thomas & Friends items only available at Day Out With Thomas

What is the Museum doing to ensure guest safety during COVID-19?

With enhanced health and safety protocols in place, this fun-filled event has been adjusted to meet local guidance. The health and well-being of our guests and employees is our primary concern and we’ve made some changes to responsibly host Thomas’ birthday celebration while having just as much fun! The Colorado Railroad Museum follows current health guidelines and performs regular facility cleanings for everyone’s safety. Some of the measures in place for Day Out With Thomas include:

  • Masks required for entry for guests ages 3 and up and must be worn while inside buildings, aboard trains, and anytime proper distance cannot be maintained.
  • Limited capacity entry to the event, allowing for safe distances to be maintained throughout the event and aboard train ride.
  • Staggered train ride seating between groups and sanitization before each train ride.
  • Advanced tickets required, sold at DayOutWithThomas.com.
  • Increased cleaning procedures throughout the event.
  • Adjusted experience offerings and layout with physical distancing and sanitization in mind. All event elements will be either hands-free or allow for sanitization with limited-contact guest services.
  • Added signage for distancing and handwashing

Will Thomas the Tank Engine be there?

Thomas the Tank Engine will travel all the way from the Island of Sodor and arrive “right on time” to take a ride with you and your family.

Will Sir Topham Hatt be there?

Yes, Sir Topham Hatt will take time away from his busy schedule as Controller of the Railway on the Island of Sodor to make a special appearance at the event.

When do tickets go on sale?

August 4: Museum Member Tickets On-Sale
August 11: General Public Tickets On-Sale 

How much are tickets?

$23 per person ages 2 years and older. Under age 2 admitted free.

Discounts: For 2020, Museum members receive $2 off (August 4-10 only) by using a provided, exclusive member code at checkout. Active Duty military receives $2 off per ticket, upon request.

How do I purchase tickets?

Tickets are available by visiting the Day Out With Thomas main page www.DayOutWithThomas.com or by calling Ticketweb at 866.468.7630.

Who needs tickets?

Tickets are required for guests ages 2 years and older. Under age 2 is free.

How will I receive my tickets?

You will have the choice to print your tickets at home, receive them in the mail if purchased at least three weeks prior to the event, or pick them up at will call on the day of the event.

Are there any refunds?

There are no refunds. Tickets may be exchanged for another day/time before the event. There is a $4 Exchange Fee per ticket (a $4 Mailing Fee may also be charged per order) and no exchanges will be made less than 4 days before the scheduled event.  (Note: Refunds will be made automatically in the event the Museum must cancel Day Out With Thomas 2020 for any reason.)

Do you recommend purchasing tickets in advance?

Due to the popularity of Day Out With Thomas, and the fact that we have reduced event capacity for 2020, advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. Significantly fewer tickets will be available for each departure time this year compared to last. When purchasing tickets, you will be asked to select a specific date and time for your ride with Thomas. Your ticket is valid only for that date and time.

DAY-OF EVENT INFORMATION

What times do trains depart?

Trains depart every 45 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the last departure at 4:00 p.m.

When should we arrive for our train ride with Thomas?

Please arrive at least one half hour before your scheduled departure. Allow time for parking, check-in, and restroom breaks so you don’t have to hurry to catch your train! Trains begin boarding 15 minutes prior to departure, and leave on time. The event grounds open at 8:00AM and close at 5:00PM.

Is there assigned seating on the train?

No. Tickets are assigned by time. Guests will board the train in family groups, and be asked to keep appropriate social distancing between groups as they board. You will have the option to choose your car, so long as seats are available leaving room between each group. Guests must be together as a group during boarding, if they wish to sit together on the train.

How long is the train ride?

Approximately 20 minutes, and led by a full-sized, talking Thomas the Tank Engine locomotive. With staggered seating allowing for safe distancing, this year’s train ride features an all-new interactive story where you’ll earn your official Travel Badge by helping Thomas.

Are you limited to just one train ride?

Yes. There is one train ride included per event ticket.

How do I get to your location?

The event site is the Colorado Railroad Museum, 17155 W. 44th Avenue, Golden, CO 80403. From Denver and surrounding areas, take I-70 to exit No. 265 (Highway 58). Take Highway 58 east to the first exit, McIntyre Street. Turn right onto McIntyre and go one block north to West 44th Avenue. Turn left on to W. 44th Avenue, and follow W. 44th Avenue for about one mile. The Colorado Railroad Museum will be on your right, just after Salvia Street. Turn right into Museum parking lot A. If parking lot A is full, you will be directed to parking lot B, located just across the street.

Is there parking available on site?

Yes. All parking is onsite at the Colorado Railroad Museum for Day Out With Thomas 2020.

Is there an additional cost for parking?

No. Parking is free at the Colorado Railroad Museum.

What if there is inclement weather?

Day Out With Thomas events take place rain or shine.

Are cameras allowed?

Absolutely! Guests are encouraged to capture their Day Out With Thomas memories for their photo album.

Will there be food available?

Yes. The Museum will host a variety of onsite food vendors offering lunch, snacks, drinks and treats for purchase during Day Out With Thomas.

Can I bring a picnic lunch?

Guests are welcome to bring a pre-packed picnic lunch, however, please note that tables are unreserved and the Museum has no locker or storage facilities. No alcohol is allowed on the Museum grounds. All food must be prepared in advance; cooking onsite is prohibited.

Are strollers permitted?

Yes! Day Out With Thomas is a family-friendly event that welcomes guests of all ages. There is even a designated area for “stroller parking” during the train ride.

Is the event accessible to persons with physical disabilities?

Yes, with some limitations. Accessible parking spaces are located in front of the Museum Depot Building in Lot A. Accessible restrooms are located in our Museum Library and supplemented by accessible portolets throughout the site. Wheelchair access for train rides is available on a specific open-air car in the train. The main Museum entrance is not equipped with power assist doors, and not all public areas of the museum are wheelchair accessible. Motorized wheelchairs are welcome.

Are pets allowed?

No pets are allowed at Day Out With Thomas. Service animals are welcome with proper identification.
