It’s #ThrowbackThursday! Today, we’re looking back at a Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion from February 6, 1949, the Club’s only excursion over the Midland Terminal Railway. For this excursion, the train operated between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek.
The car pictured is former Colorado Midland observation car No. 111, which at the time of this photo was numbered Midland Terminal No. 29. In the image, the car is sporting the Club’s distinctive drumhead, a familiar sight on Rocky Club excursions. Today, both the drumhead and this historic observation car are part of the Colorado Railroad Museum’s collections, with the observation car currently undergoing restoration in the Museum’s roundhouse.
Once restoration is complete, Car No. 111 will be displayed alongside Chicago, Burlington & Quincy business car No. 96 beneath the Museum’s recently constructed canopy roof, designed to protect these historic late 1880s-vintage cars from the elements. The Museum looks forward to sharing this soon-to-be beautifully restored observation car with visitors sometime later this year!
